Artifact 1
Origin
The creator and the author of this primary source was both made by Robert Southey. He was also the publisher. The published year and the created year were both in 1807, and the source was published in Britain. He was expelled from Westminster, because he protested against the idea that there were too much flogging in the school. He was also turned into a Unitarianism by his friends.
Purpose
The document exist, because this document shows the children in the 1800's working. Robert Southey wanted to show other people about the lives of children in the 1800's in Britain. The format of this source was a conversation between two people. Robert write like this to show directly about what that man said. He was writing this to a lot of people, since he expressed his feelings a lot in the last paragraph. The document's main point were presented in the passage.
Value
The passage probably took place in the 1800's, since we know that industrial was a major part of the 1800's. Britain was one of the first countries to start it. We know that Robert Southey is really mad about the child labor that was happening at that time. We know that Robert strongly disagree with the usage of the children. He keep trying to make the company owner to look bad, by asking about how child labor were use. This article happened during the industrial revolution, and the article made it a image about it. Lot so child labor were happening at that time, because farm works were not needed anymore.
Limitation
There were parts of the story that was hard to tell in this passage. The passage didn't talk about the wage that the children get. The passage didn't talk about the lives of the children outside of work. The passage only focused on the negative part about the children during this time. This article reflected the time period, because in the early 1800's there was the big Industrial Revolution happening. So, many of the children were face to long time working. The passage did show biased toward the factory owners.

Artifact 3
Good morning my dear friends of this lovely town. Today is a day we can all celebrate, because the great Luddites had fallen down. We may have suffered some casualties, but we scored a big notch this time toward them. We captured a big gang of Luddites. They are out of their minds. We hanged 17 people for the murder of Horsfall. They were hanged on the York Castle. We are glad that one of them finally came to their sense, by telling the truth about what happened. So, he walked away safely. Sixty of them will be sent to Australia where they will serve seven years in prison. This crisis beginning in 1812 had led Britain to send troops to different factories. Well, for those out there that believe in the old style way of making things, you are wrong. Our nation is going to be the greatest with these new factories. If you are thinking about smashing another machine, then you are just harming your self. Now, we need to all work together, and then we will have the best years of our life. Thou shall have peace. Thy factory shall have even more peace now. For those Luddites out there, this serves as a warning.
Be very Careful.

Florence Nightingale
Lady with the Lamp
Florence was a great ideal nurse during the 19th century, and she was considered a heroine back then. She saved a lot of soldiers during the Crimean War. Nightingale is one of the most famous women around that time. Florence is one the famous people that most of us today can easily recognize. She was a strong woman who believed heavily in the equality of people. She stood up for women and the minorities. She was born on May 12, 1820. She was born to a noble family, so she had a great education in her childhood. She was a very spiritual person, because she believes that God had called her to become a nurse. Her family went against her with the idea that she was going to be a nurse. She kept on pursuing her father, and finally her dad agrees to it. The Crimean war started, whenever the Russia invaded Turkey. Britain was afraid that the Russian power may get so big, that it will be out of control for them. So, Britain decides to send some troops over there, but much of the troops died from sickness. Soon, Florence Nightingale volunteered to be a nurse in Turkeys. The sanitary was terrible there, the soldiers died from how dirty the place was. Florence and her nurses were first assigned to cleaning duty, since women at that time have little rights. It wasn’t until the wounded soldiers overwhelm the hospital, that the nurses were told to start helping out for the doctors. Then this is how Florence gotten her nickname which is “Lady with the Lamp”. The soldiers said that at night, Florence will always walk around the hospital to make sure that everyone of the soldiers are all right. However, some historians believed that Florence was not that great of a nurse. People believe that after she got there, the death rate didn’t begin to fall down. In fact, the death rate increased. Soon, more historians believe that the hospital Florence was in charge of was one of the dirtiest in the East.
Later Life
She was sick in the middle of 1855, but she continued to work her best in making sure that the patients are okay. Soon, she returned to England in the August of 1856. After, she returns from the war, she didn’t stop working. She published her thoughts about cleanness in the war camps in two books, Notes on Hospital (1859) and Notes on Nursing (1859). She was able to raise up some money, and she founded the Nightingale School & Home for Nurses at St. Thomas's Hospital. She was a big women’s right person at that time. She wrote books about how women need to be treated. Whenever other countries went through, they come to see the advice of Florence. She even offered to help out India in 1857. Even though she couldn’t go, she still wrote books about how the people should do there. Florence gave lots of advice to the Indians there. She became blind in 1895, and she died on August 13, 1910She received many awards such as Order of Merit, German order of the Cross of Merit, and a honor badge from the Norwegian Red Cross Society. . There was a great competition about the kind of engine that they wanted to use, so it was decided that they were going to use the Rocket built by Robert Stephenson. The route was meant to help transport goods between cities. On September 15, 1830 this rail road was opened. It was a great success, since that over 440,000 passengers ride on this rail road for 1831. The rail is actually 31 miles long. It took him two years to complete the process.

"The Mystery of the Disease"
Therlock stood there among the rest of the people walking in the street. I couldn’t tell him out of the crowding people, he was in pure incognito. I waited for his sign, as I felt a drop of sweat on shoulder. I grab on my revolver tight ready for any sudden movement of my dear friend. Just then, he charged toward a man who came out running of a store. In a matter of seconds, a perching scream came out of the store. Then, a smash could be heard inside the shop.
I ran straight in to the shop without either bothering to look behind me. I took out my revolver, as I kicked the door open. I saw something that I shall never forget in my life. A man with sickness above all level laid there died with a stabbing straight through his heart. Also, the screaming lady laying dead with a chair smashed through her skull creating a river of blood. The lady’s mouth is still wide open. I sensed a man that is still around the store. I got my revolver ready, and I kicked open the door leading up stairs. There was four tiny bottles that were labeled Tu, D, C, Ty, and S. It seems odd to me, since in there it was nothing but full of a liquid substance.
“Hello there, thank God you are here. There was some terrible crimes done down there,” said a young man.
I pointed my revolver directly toward his forehead, and then I realized he look innocent as a disciple.
I said, “Sorry for the misbehavior, but I have only come here by the orders of the great Therlock Bolmes. Can you explain to me what had happened?”
The boy said, “I was cleaning the storage room, and all I could hear was a loud yell of pain from Master Danny and then a screaming sound from Mistress Allena. Then I saw the face of a man with a twisted face running away from the store. Then I stepped outside, and then I met you.”
“Do you what are these?” I said as I hold up the bottles.
His face turned to instant anxiety, and he begins to stumble on his words. Just then, Therlock Bolmes busted through the door with the most hideous man that I have ever seen. He came with eight officer policeman.
“Well, today was a fun day! We captured two of my most wanted criminals here,” said Therlock Bolmes.
“What did I do wrong?” the boy yelled.
Just then, Therlock grab the pocket inside his jacket, and he was able to pull out 8 bottles with fluids in there. You could see the word typhus, small pox, and cholera around it.
“I believe I have just busted the great Blann Dachard, the chemist who kills people with disease that seems common to this world. Arrest them officers, now this is a case worthy of recording now in that little notebook of yours Datson.”
I said in amazement, “How do you do it Bolmes? You make it so simple, but I know it is hard.”
“It is all elementary my dear Datson, come I will tell you on the way home,” Bolmes said with a little smile.
Bolmes said, “It all started one day whenever I arrived to the house of Sir Busch Lock. He died of typhus which was a disease that usually comes from the passing of one person to anther. Well, this seems pretty nature to me, until I found out that he never left his house since the age of 24. He has a problem with his heart which serves as a blockade to the outside freedom world. Then I knew that this was a murder. I saw something that sparked my theory a whole new step. I saw a tiny bottle with the word Ty. I knew right then that this is the one and the only clue I needed for evidence. I connected all the connections of any friends of Sir Lock. I found a very special chemist name Blann Danchard. Then everything seems to fall right in place. Blann was a child who worked for many different owners. His brothers died of diseases that are very easy to get in the small and unsanitary place of the factory. His brothers were left for the dead whenever they found out, they had these disease. All he wants now is revenge. So he began collecting typhus cells from insects and rats, he got cholera cells from the contaminated waters in the sewage. He received diphtheria, tuberculosis, and small pox all from the crowded center of towns; he even got some from the hospital. He collected the salva of those people. He put them all in the food of his old masters. I got the list of the masters that controlled him before, but it was too late. All his masters were dead expect for the last one which is Danny Lighthead. He had poisoned him long ago, but he seems to be still surviving. His patience had left him, so he decided to come back to end his life. Luckily my Daker Street irregular boys were able to tract him down. So, we two had the ability of arriving to the spot of the incident. It went earlier than I thought. He was smart by sending a red herring to make us chase the wrong guy, but he didn’t know there was a Mistress in the house. He killed the mistress, and he didn’t have time for escaped. Now all the evidence I need is these bottles I have gotten from him. We will try them on our lab rats, and then we shall able to catch him. Now, lets go back home.”

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
He was born May 22, 1859. His childhood wasn’t the best at all. His father was faced with depressions and alcohol problems. He died whenever Conan was only nine. He became a doctor in 1885. He settled down in England after traveling to different places. He started to write about Sherlock Holmes at the near end of the 1880’s. He became a very spiritual person at that time. He believed in fairies and spiritualism. One of his most admired people in his life was Joe Bell, which he made Sherlock Holmes seemed like. He wrote much of the book around the time whenever he was in clinic. His patients aren’t a lot, so he had time to work on his writing. He became a spiritualist later in his life. He started to have strong feelings about fairies; he even posted a picture of fairies dancing. Later the picture was proven a fraud. He died in 1930, because of a heart disease.
Sherlock Holmes
Quick Passage
It was on a bitterly cold and frosty morning, towards the end of the winter of '97, that I was awakened by a tugging at my shoulder. It was Holmes. The candle in his hand shone upon his eager, stooping face, and told me at a glance that something was amiss.
"Come, Watson, come!" he cried. "The game is afoot. Not a word! Into your clothes and come!"--from "The Adventure of the Abbey Grange”
Influence
He is a very famous fictional character of all time. Items such as the curved pipe, the deerstalker hat, and the magnifying glass are all symbols today for mystery. The writing of the book pretty much started around 1886 and 1927. There is even a museum that is built for him at Baker Street 221 B. There are letters that address each year asking for advice. Around the world there are Sherlockians, they are people who have a special feeling for Sherlock. There is even a whole cartoon called Case Closed, in which the main character’s name is Conan.

Dear Mr. Bagger,
Hi, my name is Daniel. This is the first time I send a message back in time. I just hope that you receive this. You were born on the day after Christmas right? You see, I am like the number one fan of you. My parents are like the exact same as yours. They put education in front of everything else. I haven been sent to many top schools too in my life. I love you so much for creating the calculator in 1835, you are awesome. Well today, there are graphing, scientific, and more complex than you can ever think of. You didn’t even stop there. You continued on to build this second big old engine that calculates. We honored by building a replica engine on your 200th birthday. I hope one day I can go to Cambridge, the university where you taught at. What most amazes me is that, you build all of this not even with electronics. It was pure mechanical, you rock man (my friend say that you don't know what rock mean, but I think you do). Your calculator help me so much. Once, there was only 18 seconds left on the clock, and your calculator helped me. I needed to solve 802432 times 8552085. I thought I was about to die, but then I plug it in to the calculator. The answer came in one second. There are even games now on the the calculator. You can even graph a equations too on the graph. People have said that calculators make you stupid, that is wrong. Math is about reasoning not about computing. You are the best.
Your Fan,
Daniel Liu

Urbanization was a great factor in the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. There were great causes to the Urbanization, and there will definitely be consequences coming with the causes. The inventions of new machines led to a bigger, crowded, and heavily dense cites. The health of the cities became a problem, because there is a lot of muck going around the city. The sanitary of the city begin to fall down. Finally, the great factories lured hundreds of people into the city. This harsh and painful revolution caused many pain to many people at that time, but this revolution got us the economy we have today.

The sanitary of the city begin to fall down. Finally, the great factories lured hundreds of people into the city. This harsh and painful revolution caused many pain to many people at that time, but this revolution got us the economy we have today.
The machines that were built in the factories were the cause of many people living their hometowns. Spinning mechanization were a great cause that put the weaving of the textile industry. Spinning cause the clothing to become cheaper, and with supply and demand it made spinning a more profitable business. During this time, the handloom weavers were actually worth something. The factories owners in fact hired a lot of them, and they all got a pretty good pay. In the year 1824, things begin to change. The handloom weavers were less needed, as more and more machines were built. So, the needs of the weavers were unnecessary any more. Both the factories and the handloom weavers can strive, but whenever the recession came the handloom weaver drop dramatically. Since there were many machines that were created, a lot of the Luddites begin to smash up machines. The machine changing was the cause of why many of the major factory cities are moving inland. The factories don’t need to be near the streams anymore. The machine changed into newer steam power. So, the factories don’t need to rely heavily on the streams flowing, but the steam can cause circular motions for the mills to work. Thus, the factories don’t need to be separated. Much of the factories can all be gather up really tight. Power sources are a large role for the building of any factories. The creation of cities such as Yorkshire and Lancashire are caused by this new invention.
There were some great other causes that made the people both “pull” and “push” into the cities that are full of factories, and with the result of many people coming into the cites that means the health problems are increasing. A simple cause and effect is the sanitary of Britain in the crowded cities. More wastes are coming out of the city than ever. Then the healths of the overall people are beginning weakened. Diphtheria, tuberculosis, and small pox are diseases that can easily be infected to a person just by talking to other people. Typhus is a disease that can be found of rats and insects. The cities can’t control the level of those infectious animals running wild among the cities. Cholera which is a disease that is spread through contaminated water are also one of the big problems. The way the leaders acted caused a lot more deaths than needed. The community leaders focused more on the building of the cities and more ways to make the cities looks better. One of reason that a lot of people are moving into the city is that much of the people believe in the city it will have better living conditions. They thought that the cities will have a better than life than living in the rural area. The people that move to the urban areas by freedom are usually young guns. In a city there will be more social life for the young guns. They get to have more fun, but their wages is pretty darn low. Later, more people move out of England into North America, New Zealand, and Australia.
The great urbanization that we can see happening to Britain in the 19th century were mainly caused by the Industrial Revolution. Some of the urbanization was not happy thoughts for some of the older generation. They were forced to move into the cities, and they were forced to work for the factories. Their lands were all closed down by the factories, because the original way of making anything can’t compete with the factories. Since the farms of people living in the rural area are all taken away, they now are all forced to move to the factories. They have to work low wages. Then this was the cause of the child labors that we can see happening during that time. Young children were gone to the factories at an early age. The family doesn’t have enough income to support all the children. Sometimes the parents are kind of hoping that the children may be sent of to work. Home business would soon become devour by the factories; some of the trades are textile, potters, furniture makers, brewers, millers and other trades. This revolution caused the beginning of the Luddites. Luddites are a group of people who attack the factories for stealing away their life.
There were great causes and effects in the 19th century of Great Britain. The urbanization of the 19th century were mainly caused by the Industrial Revolution in Britain. The health of the populated dense cities are now very dirty, and the sanitize of the cities are beginning to drop. Finally, with the inventions of many new machines the cities that we see today are beginning to take shape. The Industrial Revolution may have caused greatly to the people during that time, but there is a reward of the revolution. The economy in the 21th century is mainly made up of electronics, automobiles, and books are all made in factories. All the great technology that humans have today are the result of the changing of humans in the 19th century. Every move a person make, there will always be consequences behind it.

The Man's Lament Poem Link
Origin
The primary source is a book called The Black Man's Lament; or How to Make Sugar.
The book was published in London, and it was both created and published in the year 1826. The book was actually a poem, which was created by Amelia Opie. Harvey and Darton were the co-publishers.
Purpose
The document exist, because it was one of the few books that were for children about slavery. The author wrote this poem was meant to rise the awareness of slavery. She started with the children, since she knew that they will be the leaders of the next generation. The author wrote in a poem, because it will be funny to read for the little children. The illustrations also gives the children a good clear image of what is going on. The audience of the book was pretty much the children. This source tells of a good description of an African-American. There are definitely more deep meanings inside the poem, since their are a lot of figurative language.
Value
The author is an abolitionist. The time period can be easily recognized as the time whenever slavery was still around. Opie had already created some works about slavery, so this wasn't Opie's first time creating a slavery poem. A great controversy presented inside the book was with the slaves. Opie was on the side where people went against them. Opie was an abolitionist. In history, people at that time are trying to abolish slavery.
Limitation
We can only see how cruel the owners of the slaves are treating to the slaves themselves. We can't see the benefits of working for owners. The owners might be mad at the slaves for not working hard enough, because they give them the best food, bed, and housing. This primary source is very accurate. Slavery did happen to Britain. The author included a lot of a slave's life, but she didn't include what a owner would say. Maybe, not all of the owners are like the one describe in the book.

Artifact 13
There were three graphs that showed a lot about Britain during the 19th century. Human movements caused many economic changes. At the same time there were many causes of the human movements. Industrialization was a great cause of much of the human movements in the 19th century. At that time there were many colonies of Britain that become present day countries. The colonies were India, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. Even though United States gain their independence from Britain, but much of the immigration of Britain was going to United States.
1
The first graph was life expectancy versus income per person. From the Gapminder we can tell that Britain focused heavily on the colonies such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, because their economy grew a lot during this time. New Zealand and Australia had very similar movements of the economic growth, they both had their up and downs at about the same time. I believe that it is because of the great geographical area of the two colonies, they were really close. India didn’t seem to have much life expectancy growth or economic growth. We can see economic growth to those areas. The life expectancy rate remained about the same for the first 70 years of the century. Britain had much up and downs for the first 70 years. A lot of the life expectancy growth came in the 1870’s were the inventions of vaccines, preventing disease spreading, new drugs, low cost to medical service, and the schools began to teach about staying clean.

What does this relate to Human Migration?
Well, we can see that people are moving around and out of Britain in this century with this graph. The GDP went up high in the late century for colonies, United States, and Britain, but some of colonies and country beat Britain in economic growth. These colonies and countries are Australia, New Zealand, and United States. This means movement of Britain. Workers are moving into new colonies and countries.
2
The second graph is the comparison of the fertility rate and the CO2 emission rate. The fertility rate for the colonies, Britain, and United States all dropped in the beginning of the 19th century. The dropping of fertility rate is caused by the Industrial Revolution. I believe that the revolution caused many mental depressions upon families at that time. Thus, the fertility rate began to drop. I chose to use CO2, because the emission of Carbon Dioxide is similar to the factories with chimney smoke releases. A measure of the CO2 emission shows the industrial growth of the countries. Only Britain and United States broke the 10 tones per person mark before the end of 19th century.

Why does this relate to Human Migration?
The CO2 emissions include coal. So, we can conclude that the factories of United States are increasing. Britain also had a great strive in the tones produced each year increase in the 1860’s, but it began to decrease soon after a couple of years. At the same time United States’ emissions are increasing. Near the end of the 19th century, you could see United States emissions began to increase it seemed like it was going to have a great increase of the emissions. The fertility rate dropping means the economic hardships that people have. The fertility rate droppings can be found for the colonies, Britain, and United States.
3
Why does this relate to Human Migration?
Why does this relate to Human Migration?
The third graph is just a measure of the population from the 1800’s. India was already high in population in the beginning of the 19th century. There was still growth added to India through out the century. The Industrial Revolution seemed to be a major caused of the population growth that we can see happening to United States. A lot of British people lost their jobs to the factories decided to travel to other countries. It was easy for them just to travel to a country that had been or are currently under British control. So, there was a little bit of population growth for Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. United States had a great population growth after 1850’s. United States passed Britain before the end of the century. This is another good reason where Human Migration can be seen. The population of United States in the beginning of the century is lower than Britain, but later United States topped Britain. United States seemed to be a better chance than the other colonies for migration of humans.

My Speech
*Please Read Along. I know I stuttered a lot, so some part of this speech may not be understandable.
Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen of this house. In the past two of our greatest politicians stand before us in this house. These two politicians are the Conservatism Benjamin Disraeli and the Liberalist William Gladstone. We know that these two never agreed with each other, and we know that hatred can be seen around these two people. William Gladstone’s characteristics are definitely different from Benjamin Disraeli. Benjamin Disraeli has more of flattery personalities, and William Gladstone has a bad personality, which caused him a lot of problems, because he didn’t have much friends. Well, today I will show you the rights and the wrongs of these two people
First, I will talk about the “Home Rule”. The home rule was an idea thought up by William Gladstone. The “Home Rule” basically states that Britain will give a whole parliamentary. A parliamentary again, I state again is a term for government dears sirs a government. Well, they stated that they wanted to give a government to Ireland, because of the famine that is going on the potatoes famine actually. Because that right now, their country or our country is in a great despair, but that clause stated by William Gladstone is not stating that we are giving full power to Ireland. We still have the power to control defense issues, foreign relationship, and trading issues of Ireland. We still have that power to do so people listen and listen people listen about this, Ireland are part of us too. We are the United Kingdom of Britain and Northern Ireland people. We are great, that is what makes us great. We need to help them. Whenever they are in trouble we need help them. Now, I definitely disagree and very hatred who repealed this great act by William Gladstone.
Secondly, I will talk about the 1867 Reformation Act that was stated by both of those people Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone. This is the first time they actually agreed on something; well this is one of the few times they actually agreed on something. This act just stated that more of the middle class people will have the chance of voting in this issue for our world, for this nation, this is a great nation of United Kingdom, this is a great nation people. . So, we need people to vote out there. This reformation act nearly doubled the size before. This act serves as a great transformation of Britain that we can see right now. So that is why, I agree and strongly support those people for doing so.
Thirdly, I will move on to the “Corn Law”. A basic history about of “Corn Law”, in 1815 whenever the Napoleon War ended, there was a great famine going around Britain or actually the whole Europe. The “Corn Law” was produced to protect the agriculture of Britain the farmers of Britain, and listen to this 1846 Robert Peel, right then the prime minister of England, at that time he wanted to repeal against this idea. Well, that is a good idea. Guess What? Disraeli went against that idea. So I definitely disgust him for doing so, that is not a good idea by him people! Our country, Britain, is not a farming country any more. We are not the agriculture country, people. We are moving into industry. Factories are producing everyday. If we stay in agriculture we will remain in this despair and this lonely country behind the other Europe countries. That is why the “Corn Law” should be repealed people, and it did and I thank you for that thank you every single one of you here for that
Finally, I have a final statement to make I have concluded that Disraeli was a better politician. First off, he did a better job than Gladstone, because personally I believe in nationalism. I like his idea of nationalism and I agree that United Kingdom will survive better and that is what makes the British Empire we have today, and even though Disraeli have some disagreements with me and I don’t agree with Disraeli for every part. But I agree with Disraeli supporting the nationalism.

Hey Daniel....I'm here to comment on your artifact 13.
ReplyDeleteA very nice introduction, which stated the main colonies of the British Empire. But the analyses of your three graphs don't have sufficient information. Adding datas of different years allow your readers to understand more easily about the shift between each other. I'll be easier to recognize the change Great Britain experienced if there were numerals for us to consult. Also, you didn't state any probable reasons for why life expectancy grew in the first graph. Well, yes, the industrialization might have caused the income per person to drop....but why? Please elaborate.
But...nice work! =D
By the way, I posted some comments on your disraeli vs gladstone video on youtube...go check them out! :)
